Attendance Policy for Concerts and Performances

Student attendance policy for District Concerts and Other Performances.

The Board of Education of the Elmira City School District recognizes the importance of student performances in the development of creative expression and the 'celebration of aesthetic and personal achievement." The Board of Education recognizes the importance of student performances in generating community knowledge and support. Public performances for purposes other than educational merit must be authorized by the Board of Education.

Student Performances are defined as:

  • School-centered programs, such as concerts and plays
  • Community functions for school's educational needs
  • School exhibitions held as part of curriculum on a non-profit basis
  • Educational broadcasts, including music festivals and competitions sponsored by schools
  • Civic functions or local, state or national interest with sufficient breadth to enlist the general support and cooperation of the community
  • Local charity benefits where the intent is not to substitute for professional musicians
  • Other performances that might be mutually agreed upon by school authorities and official representatives of local professional musicians

Students in elementary performance ensembles are expected to attend performances in preparation for participation in the secondary music program. In ensembles where a grade is given, concerts are considered part of the course examination. Unexcused absences will significantly lower a student's grade for that marking period -- up to and including failure of the course.

Music concerts serve as a demonstration of knowledge and skills developed over a given period of time. The learning experience for the entire ensemble depends upon the musical contributions of each individual. The learning experience and performance changes when members are not present for the performance. Music teachers will assist in arranging transportation when possible.

If the absence is due to an emergency, parent or guardian should inform the teacher as soon as possible. The student will be provided with an appropriate alternative to replace the grade lost when legally absent.

Parents and guardians will be informed in advance of all concert dates, times and places. If there are any questions or concerns regarding this policy, please contact your child's music teacher.
